Moon Signs: What the Moon Means in the Twelve Zodiac Signs

You probably know your zodiac sign – but which sign was the Moon in when you were born, and where is it today? This guide explains what the Moon sign stands for in astrology, why the Moon moves through the zodiac so quickly and how Stellune interprets the daily Moon for each zodiac sign.

What the Moon sign stands for

In Western astrology, the Sun describes the conscious core of a personality, and the rising sign describes how someone approaches the world. The Moon, by contrast, stands for the inner life: feelings, needs, habits and whatever creates a sense of security. The Moon sign symbolically describes the style in which these needs appear – fiery and spontaneous, earthy and steady, airy and communicative, or watery and empathetic.

Together with the Sun and the rising sign, the Moon forms the so-called “Big Three”, the three most widely considered factors of a birth chart. Anyone who only knows their Sun sign therefore sees just part of the picture. One thing remains important: astrological associations are offers of interpretation for self-reflection, not a psychological diagnosis.

Why the Moon moves through the zodiac so quickly

The Moon is the fastest body in the horoscope. On average it covers a little more than 13 degrees of sky per day – per hour, roughly its own diameter. It therefore needs only about two to two and a half days for one zodiac sign of 30 degrees, and after about 27.3 days it has passed through the entire zodiac once.

For the birth chart this means that the date of birth alone is not always enough. If the Moon changed signs on the day you were born, the time of birth decides which sign it was in. For an exact Moon sign you therefore need your date, time and place of birth, which an ephemeris or a chart calculator converts into the Moon's position.

The Moon in the twelve signs

The following overview summarizes which needs the astrological tradition associates with the Moon in each sign. The third column describes the natal Moon, the last one the mood astrologers attribute to a day on which the Moon passes through that sign.

Read the keywords as tendencies, not as boxes. In astrological interpretation, how a Moon sign shows up always depends on the rest of the chart as well – and in real life above all on your experiences, your surroundings and your own decisions.

Moon signs by element

The four elements offer a quick way into the Moon sign. Fire Moons (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) are read as reacting spontaneously and needing enthusiasm. Earth Moons (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) seek stability and tangible results. Air Moons (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) process feelings through conversations and thoughts. Water Moons (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) experience feelings particularly intensely and need places to retreat.

The element also explains why some combinations are considered easy and others full of tension. A Moon in the same element as the Sun is often described as harmonious; fire and air as well as earth and water are considered mutually supportive. When other elements meet, interpretations speak of tension – which can just as well be understood as a source of drive.

Classical dignities of the Moon

Traditional astrology assigns each planet signs in which it is said to express its qualities particularly well or only with difficulty. For the Moon: it rules Cancer, is exalted in Taurus, is in detriment in Capricorn and in fall in Scorpio. These assignments go back to ancient and medieval astrological texts.

Modern interpretations usually treat the dignities as nuance rather than judgment. A Moon in Capricorn is then not considered “bad” but a sign that feelings tend to be controlled and expressed through responsibility. The four classical placements at a glance:

  • Domicile in Cancer: closeness and care find natural expression.
  • Exaltation in Taurus: calm and steadiness strengthen emotional balance.
  • Detriment in Capricorn: feelings tend to show up in a controlled way and through a sense of duty.
  • Fall in Scorpio: emotions are intense and are only shared once trust is established.

Natal Moon and daily Moon

Besides the Moon in the birth chart, astrology also considers the daily Moon, meaning the sign the Moon is currently passing through. Because it changes signs every two to three days, it is seen as setting the pace for the mood of short periods. Many daily horoscopes therefore rely mainly on it.

Stellune calculates the Moon's position for each daily edition at 12:00 UTC and assigns it to a house for every zodiac sign. The sign in question counts as the first house, and the following signs as the second to twelfth houses. If the Moon is in Gemini, for example, it falls into the third house for Aries, the house of exchange and communication – and this is exactly the theme the daily horoscope for Aries then picks up.

What Moon signs can and cannot do

Frequently asked questions about Moon signs

How do I find out my Moon sign?

You need your date, time and place of birth. With these, an ephemeris or a chart calculator can determine the Moon's position at the moment of your birth. Without a birth time, the result is only certain if the Moon did not change signs on that day.

How long does the Moon stay in one sign?

About two to two and a half days. Because the Moon moves at varying speeds along its orbit, the duration varies slightly. It passes through all twelve signs in about 27.3 days.

Which is more important: Sun sign or Moon sign?

Astrologically, the two describe different levels. The Sun stands for identity and life goals, the Moon for feelings and needs. Many interpretations therefore look at them together with the rising sign rather than individually.

Why is the Moon in a different sign in my daily horoscope than in my birth chart?

The daily horoscope uses the daily Moon, meaning the Moon's current position. Your natal Moon, by contrast, is its position at the time of your birth. The two are independent of each other and only match by coincidence.

Which sign is the Moon in today?

You can find the current Moon sign and Moon phase on every Stellune horoscope page. The information refers to 12:00 UTC. If the Moon changes signs that day, it may already be in the neighboring sign in the morning or evening.

Why is the Moon considered the ruler of Cancer?

Classical astrology assigns each planet a sign whose themes it particularly matches. Care, origins and a sense of security are considered themes of both the Moon and Cancer. That is why Cancer is traditionally regarded as the Moon's domicile.
